BJP 'tries to buy media' in Leh | Journalists lodge complaint with police in Leh | | Early Times Report LEH, May 4: The media fraternity in Leh has accused the Bhartiya Janata Party, including its J&K president Ravinder Raina, of trying to bribe local journalists in a bid to "influence the outcome of the elections," in a shocking revelation two days ahead of the last phase of parliamentary polls. In their complaint to the Station House Officer of Leh police station, the journalists affiliated with the Press Club Leh have accused some state BJP leaders of "offering us money in envelops" at a press conference held at a local hotel on May 2. "We the undersigned members of Press Club Leh, would like to lodge a complaint regarding the press conference organised by BJP at hotel Singay Palace on 2 May around 2 pm. After the press conference was over, BJP leaders including state president Ravinder Raina and MLC Vikram Randhawa tried to bribe the media persons by offering us money in envelops in an attempt to use our platform to influence the outcome of elections. We didn't accept the offer and rejected it out rightly and we showed our anguish at their attempt," reads the joint complaint signed by Leh-based media persons namely Morupt Stanzin, Tsewang Rigzin, Rinchen Angmo, Tashi Lundup, Stanzin Desal, Tsewang Paldan and Stanstrung Dorjay before SHO Leh. The complainants added: "Press fraternity of Ladakh strongly condemns this and we would like you to kindly register an FIR against Ravinder Raina and Vikram Randhawa for violating the Model Code of Conduct and also their attempt to bribe media persons in Ladakh. We would provide all necessary support when required in this regard." No state BJP leader was willing to comment on the serious allegations levelled by Leh journalists against their party leadership. The Senior Superintendent of Police, Leh, when contacted by Early Times denied that he had received any complaint from the Leh journalists. However, he said a contesting candidate had contacted him and alleged that some BJP leaders have tried to bribe the local journalists. Notably, in the Himalayan plateau of Ladakh, the BJP candidate Jamyang Namgyal is caught in an intense battle with the Congress heavy-weight Rigzin Spalbar for the Lok Sabha seat which is going to polls on May 6. The BJP has lined up top central and state leaders for campaigning in Ladakh. |
