Lack of infrastructure in colleges, hampers higher education | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, May 18: Though Governor led state government had announced new colleges but the already established colleges such as Government Degree College Kalakote, have no infrastructure at place as well as permanent faculty post, due to which it failed to get NCC unit. Sources informed that on 14/05/2019, a team of NCC comprising of Colonel and Commanding Officer of Rashtriya Rifle visited the GDC Kalakote for offering new NCC unit in the college but they denied it for want of infrastructure and shortage of permanent faculty posts. Since the college was established in rural area of district Rajouri, the Higher Education Department has literally failed to provide requisite infrastructure and sufficient manpower. Presently only five permanent faculty of subject Arabic, Political Science and Sociology and one each post of Physical Teacher and Librarian is fulfilled and remaining are vacant. Sources further informed that the permanent faculty posts of Subjects including Economics, English, Education, Urdu and Hindi and Environmental Science were not filled as the subject faculty were engaged on academic arrangement. Even the post of Principal College is lying vacant from February 14 after the transfer of the then principal", Besides, the construction work of GDC Kalakote was allotted to Jammu and Kashmir Housing Board three years back, which had set the deadline of May, 2019 but ironically, the board has so far succeed to lay plinth (foundation) of Academic and Administration block. A total of Rs 5.48 Crores stand released in favour of construction agency but work is at snail's pace. "Given the shortage of permanent building, the class work is being run from the hired six room of Government Higher Secondary School Kalakote in which three rooms are being used for Principal office, Library and staff room and only in three rooms where nine subject are being taught. An Assistant Professor while wishing anonymity said that one hand the higher education department is opening new colleges whereas already running college have been facing acute shortage of manpower and infrastructure since their establishment and nobody in higher education seems bothered about it. |
