After losing face in Jammu, Congress says it will try to understand psyche of people
Struggle for survival

Early Times Report
JAMMU, May 27: The massive victory of the BJP in Jammu and Ladakh in the just-concluded general election has rattled the local Congress leadership. Convinced that it suffered ignominious defeats in Jammu and Ladakh provinces because it never appreciated the sentiment and psyche of the people of these two regions, the Congress has said that "it would reconsider its stand on the basic issues of the people of Jammu province to win over them and strengthen and enlarge its support base in the province".
"We will try to understand the sentiments of the people of Jammu province. We will listen to them and appreciate the issues they hold very dear. We will make a new beginning in the province after understanding as to why the people of Jammu province rejected the Congress," said the party spokesperson while reflecting on the party's defeat.
He admitted that the BJP's poll planks, including surgical strike, Pakistan and nationalism, clicked and motivated the electorate to swing behind the BJP. He also said that the Congress would focus on the three problems facing the people of the province. He was referring to the acute unemployment in and under-development of Jammu and the menace of discrimination.
It was not the first time that the Congress suffered defeats in Jammu and Ladakh. It had met a similar fate in 2014 general election as well. In 2014 also, it was the BJP which had won all the Lok Sabha seats. Besides, the Congress had also suffered a humiliating defeat in the 2014 assembly elections. It had won only 12 seats from Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh. Significantly, the Congress had failed to win even one seat in the Kathua. Samba, Jammu, Doda districts. But more than that, 9 of out of its 12 MLAs, 10 belonged to the majority community and two were Buddhists, all from Ladakh's Leh district.
The question is: Will the Kashmir-based Congress leadership allow the Congress party to tread a path it treaded all through? It's difficult to answer this question considering the nature of the statements the Kashmir-based Congress leaders, including the JKPCC chief GA Mir and former JKPCC chief Saif-ud-Din Soz, issue and make on a daily basis. They speak the language of the NC and the PDP.
