JMC couldn't install single dustbin in our area: Gadigarh residents tell Munish | Say, their MLA never visited them after getting elected | | Early Times Report JAMMU, May 26: Editor Early Times, Munish Gupta, who has decided to contest forthcoming Assembly elections from the Gandhi Nagar constituency as an Independent candidate, met people from all walks of life in Karan Bagh Basti and Azad Naagar localities of Upper Gadigarh area for the fourth consecutive day on Monday. He met people in different localities and listened to their woes. The locals informed him that Gadigarh and Karan Bagh Basti come under the limit of Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC), but the JMC has not installed a single dustbin in these localities. "We are forced to dump all the garbage along the lane or residential plot which is lying vacant," locals told Munish. "Lanes and drains are choked. These have not been connected with the sewerage nallah. This has resulted in foul smell engulfing the entire locality. The unfortunate part is that the JMC seems least bothered about the problems being faced by us," said, Saran Kour, of Karan Nagar Basti. She said that in 2014 Assembly polls they voted for MLA Kavinder Gupta, who held important positions during the PDP-BJP regime "but he never visited our area after becoming the MLA. However some work of lane and drain was started by former minister Raman Bhalla but his successor MLA (Kavinder Gupta) did not pay any attention, which led to work coming to a grinding halt. You can see for yourself that road connecting Karan Nagar Basti with Upper Gadigarh is in shambles," she added. Sardar Singh, 90, a retired Army soldier said that they had repeatedly urged the local councilor and former MLA Kavinder Gupta to get the drain connected with the main sewerage nallah, so that people heave a sigh of relief but it was never taken up," he added. Jaspreet Singh, who stays near the Gurudwara at Karan Bagh Basti, said that the construction of the outer road was started nearly one decade ago and the concerned department had put some concrete material for new road but the department left the work incomplete. "Till date whosoever has come for election campaigning in our area he or she has promised us that the road would be blacktopped but after getting elected we have not seen anyone coming back," said Singh. Another resident Ravinder Pal Singh said that the most of the people have written on their boundary walls "Don't put garbage here." "This shows how the JMC has neglected our area. Had the JMC installed the dustbin near every chowk, this area would have been neat and clean, he said, adding that JMC is not serious about Swach Bharat Abhayan. "It's merely a slogan aimed at seeking votes from the gullible people." While Manbir Singh of Azad Nagar locality also minced no words in criticizing the authorities for their lackadaisical approach in creating a proper infrastructure for sewerage in the area as people have no other option but to live along the choked drains and a vacant plot which has turned into a mini pond filled with garbage, algae and wild weed. "We approached the former MLA Kavinder Gupta to get our problem sorted out but nothing was done. The piece of vacant land has made life of the residents miserable. Filth emanates foul smell while the water logged in the plot is a breeding ground for insects like mosquitoes," said Manbir Singh. Besides the issue of blocked drains in the absence of a proper outlet, the inhabitants of Azad Nagar are also grappled with the problem of load shedding and dilapidated condition of lanes. "The residential area of Azad Nagar has grown manifold in the last few years thereby increasing the load of electric supply but there is only one transformer feeding the entire area which is insufficient to cater to the needs of the inhabitants. Load shedding has become order of the day," said Irfan, a resident of Azad Nagar. There were several other residents in the area who also complained of low voltage and frequent power cuts. They also sought an early solution to the problem they are facing while interacting with Munish Gupta. Several residents of the area, including Lakhbir Singh, Taranjit Singh and Trilok Singh, a retired Inspector, told Munish Gupta that the majority of the locality is facing the problem of poor condition of lanes as they are without proper tiling due to which they are uneven and often led to mishaps for the commuters. While few residents of Azad Nagar area also demanded to restore a viaduct which got washed away due to flash floods. "The link needs to be restored as it was a convenient approach connecting Azad Nagar with Chatha which saves lot of time for the residents," said Kulwant Kour. |
