SKUAST-J to hold conference on indigenous animal genetic resources
5/27/2019 11:07:18 PM
Early Times Report
JAMMU, May 27: The introduction of exotic breeds of cattle has been one of the major drivers of making India world's largest producer of milk at 165.4 million tones said Dr. K.S. Risam Vice Chancellor Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences & Technology of Jammu (SKUAST Jammu). According to him, however there are concerns nationally and globally about the potential long-term consequences of loss of domestic animal diversity.
The introduction of exotic breeds of livestock and other social and economic pressures have exposed locally adapted indigenous breeds to the risk of extinction and loss of valuable genetic diversity. According to estimates, out of India's 300 million bovine population, 190 million are cattle and 110 million are estimated to be buffaloes. Of this, 80 per cent cattle are indigenous and non-descript breeds and their potential has not been fully exploited yet said Dr. Risam.
To deliberate on the consequences of loss of indigenous animal genetic resources, SKUAST Jammu is set to host the 14th Annual Convention of the Indian Society of Animal Genetics and Breeding (ISAG&B) and National Symposium on "Exploring the Potential for Sustainable Use of Indigenous Animal Genetic Resources for Enhancing Productivity and Profitability" from May 29-30, 2019 at Faculty of Veterinary Sciences & Animal Husbandry, R. S. Pura campus.
In the press conference held at SKUAST of Jammu Chatha campus by the organizing committee of the conference, Dr. K.S. Risam Vice Chancellor SKUAST of Jammu and patron of the symposium informed that the leading experts from all over the country and abroad will deliberate on the issues concerning animal breeding and genetics, and production for identifying the research priorities for using novel technologies for enhancing productivity and profitability of the livestock farmers of the country.
He said that the symposium will discuss and deliberate upon various aspects of livestock diversity and conservation, biostatistics, bio-informatics, genomic tools and sustainable management of indigenous livestock and poultry genetic resources. Expert panel discussion on "Genome Edited Livestock for India" will come out with recommendations that shall be of importance to policy planners in livestock sector. Dr. K. S. Risam, an authority on animal breeding and genetics and Dr. T. J. Rasool, President of the ISAG&B will be the conveners for the round table conference whereas leading animal genetics researchers/ academicians like Dr. M. Mukesh, Dr. T. Dutt, Dr. G. K. Gour and Dr. A. K. Tomar are expected to be the panelists for this important discussion.
