Jammu, May 28: 12th Natrang Theatre Festival, a festival of 4 plays opened here today at Natrang Studio Theatre, Jammu with the presentation of a Hindi play 'Ek Raat' based on a story of Rabindranath Tagore, adapted by Pratap Sehgal and directed by Neeraj Kant.Natrang is organising a Theatre Festival of four plays every month since last thirteen months in commemoration with the celebrations of 35 glorious years of Natrang. In his welcome address, Natrang Director Balwant Thakur informed that Natrang has already created a record in the country by showcasing 44 major different plays by the same group in a period of twelve months. He complimented all actors, directors and technicians of Natrang associated with the holding of such historic Natrang Theatre Festivals. Natrang has not only provided the audience a chance to witness the different plays of highly social & artistic relevance but also has added to their creative and intellectual repository by staging the literary works of the most celebrated writers of the world.
The story of the play revolves around a man, who is living on the memories of his love. 'Neelesh', an assistant teacher curses himself for missing out a golden opportunity of getting married to his childhood love because he could not muster the courage to stand against the will of his father. Recollecting all the sweet memories with 'Surbala', Neelesh shares his tragic love story with 'Ghoshal', whom he considers a true friend. Neelesh shares how he keeps cherishing all the moments spent with 'Surbala' during their childhood days, and how difficult it is for him to accept that she has got married to Ramlochan, an advocate in Calcutta. He further goes on explaining to him the dilemma of visiting her house to meet Ramlochan, who is married to his childhood love. Surbala and Neelesh witnesses a tragic situation when suddenly flood occurs in the city and Neelesh comes forward to rescue her from drowning in the rising flood water. They both took refuge on a rock, which was much above water level. Getting nostalgic, he tries to revive all the moments spent together during their childhood. Though Surbala gets worried, how difficult it will be for the people to digest that a married woman has spent whole night with another man, but Neelesh keeps his calm, and asks her to gather courage to speak the truth as they were true and pure and moreover they were left with no other option to save their lives.
