Colonel Colony faces acute water crisis | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, May 28: Giving further momentum to his mass contact programme, Editor Early Times, Munish Gupta, who has decided to contest the Assembly elections as an independent candidate from Gandhi Nagar constituency, today visited Colonel Colony and Ranibagh localities near Jammu Airport. He interacted with people from all walks of life and listened to the problems they are facing. The majority of locals residing in Colonel Colony while interacting with Munish Gupta informed him about the various issues being confronted by them including scarcity of water and irregular power supply besides few of the inhabitants of this area also complained about the crumbling lanes as well as the problem of garbage dumping in the nearby nallah. "The water supply in Colonel Colony is not up to the mark. The gravity of the problem of inadequate water supply could be gauged from the fact it is made available after an interval of 3-4 days and that too for a very short duration of only 5 to 10 minutes," said Ramesh Verma. "It is next to impossible for us to store water for our daily needs when the supply is not only irregular but also insufficient. The problem of water scarcity aggravates in summers while it further gets deteriorated in rainy season," he added. While Vikrant Sharma of the same locality lamented the PHE authorities for their lack of concern over the problem of water shortage saying that despite repeated pleas of residents, the officers of the department paid no heed. "We approached the PHE authorities on several occasions but they turned a deaf ear to our requests. We even appealed the PHE department to change the water pipes as they were laid about three-four decades ago when the area was less populated but the number of families residing in Colonel Colony has swelled due to which the demand for water has also increased," said Vikrant Sharma. Several residents in the area complained that they are not getting regular power supply despite paying usage charges on time while few locals raised the issue of garbage dumping in a nallah passing through the colony. "If the existence of nallah was not enough for giving us sleepless nights, the garbage dumping has added to our woes as foul smell emanates from it which becomes unbearable at times," said few locals of Colonel Colony. While interacting with people in Ranibagh area, Munish Gupta was informed that the cremation ground in the area needs to be upgraded as the place lacks basic facilities. "The cremation ground in Ranibagh area is not equipped with the much need amenities like benches, sheds and other allied services due to which the visitors face a lot of problems," said Amarjeet Singh of Ranibagh. |
