Is political alliance ahead of LA polls taking shape in JK? | Shattered PDP ready to go with rejuvenated NC | | Early Times Report Jammu, May 28: To save itself from further embarrassment and rout, Peoples Democratic Party is all set to offer pre-poll alliance with National Conference for the upcoming Assembly elections. A major hint about such a vital political development was found in a press handout on Tuesday by the PDP in which the party spokesman said that during the meeting of its Political Affairs Committee, the party has decided to coordinate with other political groups of the state in the interests of the people. As per the reports, the PDP could make an official offer to National Conference for pre-poll alliance and a seat sharing agreement for the State Assembly elections. A PDP leader divulged that there is no other option but to make this alliance happen. "The votes are being divided and if this remains the situation, we will soon have BJP all over and regional political parties reduced to rubble. This has to stop at any cost," said an anonymous PDP leader. National Conference on the other side looks indecisive over such an arrangement if it comes into shape. A senior NC leader told Early Times that the party for now is all euphoric about its recent victory and isn't even confabulating over the option of joining hands with its arch rival PDP for the coming assembly polls. "Still, it is the party president who will take a final call on this subtle issue. It is possible that if all goes well, the two parties may have a seat sharing agreement," said the NC leader. The attempts of the bonhomie between the two arch rivals- NC and PDP started on September 12, this year- 82 days after BJP withdrew its support from the PDP. On September 12, then PDP leader Syed Altaf Bukhari dropped the first hint that the PDP was mulling to join NC and form a joint forum. "In the interest of State and its people in particular, PDP will not shy away from fighting any nefarious designs jointly with NC and other regional political forces for safeguarding the special constitutional position of Jammu and Kashmir," Bukhari had said in his September 12 statement. On November 21, last year, then PDP leader Bukhari briefly spoke on phone to his party chief Mehbooba Mufti before driving his car to Omar Abdullah's Srinagar residence. As Omar and Bukhari met and decided to join hands,Bukhari revealed the same to media. In the evening on the same day, PDP President Mehbooba Mufti drafted letter to state Governor Satya Pal Malik, claiming support of 60 MLAs and sought his appointment to stake claim on government formation. However, the letter didn't get faxed, prompting Mehbooba to upload it on social networking site twitter while tagging the Governor in it. Hours later, Governor signed the order dissolving the assembly and dashing the hopes of the regional parties to come together and rule the state. |
