Residents share their miseries with Munish | Uncovered nallah, power cuts pester people of Amar, Vimala colonies | | Early Times Report Jammu, May 30: Editor Early Times, Munish Gupta, who would contest the upcoming Assembly elections from the Gandhi Nagar segment as an Independent candidate, on Thursday conducted door-to door campaign in Vimala Colony, Amar Colony which fall under the Cantonment area of Jammu and some mohallas of old Satwari. During the campaign, Munish Gupta interacted with people from all walks of life and heard the various issues from the local residents which are being faced by them. The residents of Darshan Lal of Vimala Colony told Munish Gupta that the local body of cantonment works hard to provide all basic facilities to them. But there are problems that do not come under the jurisdiction of cantonment area like unscheduled curtailment of power. The Power Development Department has failed to adhere to its curtailment schedule, with the result electricity plays hide and seek, that too when the scorching heat is at its peak in the winter capital of the state. "Initially, the cantonment body installed dustbin along the road from Peer Baba to Mill Mohalla, but some of these dustbins got damaged and some were replaced by the body at some other places, hence the people have been dumping their garbage along the road, causing huge inconvenience to the residents," said Balbir Singh. The cantonment body's garbage collecting vehicle comes occasionally in the area to lift garbage. The foul smell emanating from it makes the life of local residents hellish. The daily commuters and morning and evening walkers have also to bear the brunt, said Deep Kour, a resident of same colony. "I am 70-year-old, but I am not covered under any pension scheme like Old age or Widow. Few days back when I went to Tehsildar Office Gadigarh for taking a certificate regarding pension, the Tehsildar humiliated me in front of one dozen people. He said 'your children have left you alone and it is not my problem. I have no pension scheme for people like you'," Kour said. Raj Kumar of Amar Colony in Ward No. 13 told Munish Gupta that a nallah that during the monsoon season becomes "devastating for us," and rest of year it emanates foul smell because all the pipes of latrines (toilets) empties into it. "A former Congress minister had promised us that the nallah would be covered, but after his defeat he never visited here again while his successor MLA, Kavinder Gupta, hadn't time to listen to us," Raj Kumar said. The nallah which comes from the cantonment area and flows through Amar Colony and empties into the main nallah is covered with the slab, but around 100 meter area of the nallah isn't covered which is adjacent to Raj Kumar's home. It's not known why the administration left 100 meters uncovered that too where downtrodden section of the society are living. |
