PM Modi releases the book "Chandra Shekhar - the Last Icon of Ideological Politics | | | Vinod Chandrashekhar Dixit
KUDOS to our PM Shri Narendra Modi for releasing the book "Chandra Shekhar - the Last Icon of Ideological Politics. While releasing the Book Modi has rightly said that "Chandra Shekhar was a man of culture and principles but he didn't receive the due respect that he deserved. He rightly narrated that attempts were made to tarnish the image of the former Prime Minister. He stressed on the need for a new political culture which is beyond political untouchability. It is a welcome decision by PM Modi that there will be a museum for all former Prime Ministers who have served our nation. Recalling the historic Padyatra that Chandra Shekhar had undertaken, for the farmers, the poor, and the marginalized, PM Modi has appreciated his clarity of thought, commitment to the people, and dedication to democratic principles and that it is unfortunate that we failed to give him the respect he deserved, at that time. Shri Chandra Shekhar undertook a marathon walk (Padayatra) through the country from Kanyakumari in the deep South to Rajghat (Samadhi of Mahatma Gandhi) in New Delhi covering a distance of nearly 4260 kms from January 6, 1983 to June 25, 1983. The Padayatra was undertaken to renew rapport with the masses and to understand their pressing problems. He became part of the socialist movement and was made secretary of the Ballia unit of Praja Socialist Party. He rose quickly to the rank of joint secretary of the party's state unit, and then its general secretary. In 1962, he was elected to the Rajya Sabha. According to the report it is said that Chandra Shekhar was said to be opposed to the idea of seeking help from global institutions like the IMF and World Bank, but the P.V. Narasimha Rao-led Congress government that came to power after him did exactly that. Chandra Shekhar was born on July 1, 1927, in a farmer's family in village Ibrahimpatti in District Ballia, Uttar Pradesh. He was President of the Janata Party from 1977 to 1988. He was attracted to politics from his student days and was known as a fire-brand idealist with revolutionary fervor. He was among the few individuals in the then ruling party who was imprisoned during the Emergency. He has always rejected the politics of power and opted for the politics of commitment to democratic values and social change. Known as 'Young Turk' for his courage and bold decisions he took, Chandra Shekhar was the 9th prime minister of India. Chandrashekhar was born on July one, 1927 in a farmer family in Ballia district of Uttar Pradesh. He, started his political career during his college days and was known as a as a firebrand idealist. Late Atal Bihari Vajpayee while releasing a book on Chandra Shekhar's writings in 2004 said 'what strikes me most about Chandra Shekhar is that he has always been a rebel at heart.'' ''He has demanded answers from his own government and questioned it when it deviated from its socialist path." Chandra Sekhar has always stood against politics of personalities and has favoured politics of ideology and social change. This propelled him more towards Shri Jayaprakash Narayan and his idealist view of life during the turbulent days of 1973-75. He soon became a focal point of dissent within the Congress Party. When Emergency was declared on June 25, 1975, he was arrested under Maintenance of Internal Security Act inspite of the fact that he was a member of the Central Election Committee and Working Committee, top bodies of the Indian National Congress. Though he lasted for a very short period, he will always be remembered for his decision-making based on sound reasoning. |
