Kashmir unnerved as NIA intensifies raids from south to north | | | Early Times Report SRINAGAR, July 28: With the National Investigation Agency intensifying its raids in Kashmir, many of the people are unnerved thinking who would be the next target of the NIA. While as in the recent past the NIA raided some businessmen dealing with the cross-LoC trade, many others including politicians are unnerved fearing, apprehending that they could also be questioned. Just around a month ago the NIA had questioned brother of a senior politician in the national capital. But for the last few days the NIA is focusing on businessmen community. Some of the separatist leaders are also unnerved as they apprehend being questioned by the NIA soon. The NIA on Sunday carried out fresh raids in north Kashmir's Baramulla district as a team accompanied by police and paramilitary CRPF conducted searches at four houses belonging Tanveer Ahmad, Asif Lone, Tariq Ahmad and Bilal Bhat. All the four persons are believed to be businessmen and were associated cross-LoC trade which stands stalled after India banned it following Pulwama attack on Feb 14. It is for the second time in less than a week that that NIA has raided some businessmen in Kashmir. Earlier on July 23, the sleuths of the NIA raided the Parimpora Fruit Mandi in Srinagar and the house of a cross-Line of Control (LoC) trader in south Kashmir's Pulwama district. A team had searched the house of trader Ghulam Ahmad Wani alias Bardana at Achgoza Keller, Pulwama. Another NIA team searched the main wholesale fruit market in the city in Parimpora locality. The Ministry of Home Affairs on April 18 2019 suspended cross-LoC trade, citing "funnelling of illegal weapons, narcotics and fake currency" as reasons. The NIA suspects that some traders may have used the business to formulate a channel for terror funding. The NIA investigation suggested that a significant number of trading firms were being operated by persons who were "closely associated with banned terrorist organisations". Despite repeated attempts the concerned couldn't be contacted for comments. |
