Centre demands suspension of eight Kashmir-based Twitter accounts for spreading rumours | | | Agencies NEW DELHI, Aug 12: Amid the ongoing security clampdown in Jammu and Kashmir following the revocation of Article 370, which granted special status to the militancy-hit state, the Twitter accounts of separatist leaders in the Valley were blocked today, suggested media reports. The move by Twitter comes amid concerns raised by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) that the separatist leaders may misguide the people in the Valley, which is already on the edge following the revocation of Article 370, which conferred special status to the state, and bifurcation of the state into two Union Territories. The Union home secretary recommended the closure of few Twitter accounts for "spreading rumours and misinformation to disturb the peace and calm in the Valley." According to an news channel report, the list of Twitter accounts includes one allegedly belonging to separatist leader Syed Ali Geelani. Other than Geelani, seven other accounts have been recommended for suspension: 1. @kashmir787 -- Voice of Kashmir 2. @Red4Kashmir -- MadihaShakil Khan 3. @arsched -- Arshad Sharif 4. @mscully94 -- Mary Scully 5. @sageelaniii -- Syed Ali Geelani 6. @sadaf2k19 7. @RiazKha61370907 8. RiazKha723 Jammu and Kashmir has been under lockdown since the government on August 5 abrogated Article 370, and has divided the state into two union territories. The restrictions were eased on Sunday to allow people for pre-festival shopping. Restrictions were reimposed on Sunday evening in order to ensure that festivities are carried out without any untoward incident. All modes of communication, including the internet and phones, have been snapped. While the Home Ministry has maintained that the situation in the Valley remains normal, foreign media have reported large-scale protests in many areas over the weekend. |
