Early Times Report
srinagar, Oct 4: The Indian Army's maiden recruitment drive held in Kashmir since the abrogation of article 370 on Aug 5, 2019 has drawn "historic" response from the aspiring to join the defence services.
On Oct 3, the recruitment drive held by the army here post abrogation of the special status drew huge response with over 2000 youth turning up to become soldiers to serve the nation.
Official said the drive was for the close relatives and blood relations of the ex servicemen from the Army.
A senior official said after comparing the turnout of youth with the previous such drives it was found that this time highest number of aspirants had turned up for the test.
Referring to the official records of the previous tests, the official said previously only up to 1200 youth would turn up. "This time it was around 40 % drive in the number of aspirants which is a record in itself," the official said.
The recruitment drive was held at the Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry Centre at Rangreth, which is barely 4 miles from the residence of senior separatist leader Syed Ali Geelani.
A senior official said what was even surprising is that many of the aspirants were from South Kashmir areas like Kokernag which is seen as a hotbed of militancy.
Officials said the overwhelming public response has proved that the people of Kashmiri were fed up of the separatist politics and thus wanted to join mainstream as nationalists.
"The youth who till two months ago would think of pelting stones have finally realized that separatist sentiments were a hoax that only brought destruction in the valley. Having realized it," they want change.
It is pertinent to mention that Kashmir has been witnessing shutdown since the abrogation of the special status and bifurcation of State into two Union Territories.
"But while Pakistan is trying to instigate the people of Kashmir, the Kashmiri youth want to serve the nation," said a senior official.
