Early Times Report

Jammu, Oct 30: All J&K Panchayat Conference on Wednesday asserted that the Independent candidates have swept the first-ever Block Development Council polls conducted in J&K while BJP, which expected a cakewalk with major political parties boycotting the polls, came a distant second with 81 blocks.
Addressing media persons here on Wednesday, Shafiq Mir, Chairman AJKPC flanked by Arun Kumar Sharma, Provincial President AJKPC asserted that the Panchayati Raj came into existence in J&K just due to the efforts of Panchayat Conference only not due to any political outfit.
He mentioned that in the recently concluded Block Development Council polls in which mostly Independent Candidate won the elections.
He said that the polls were held for 310 block in which Independent candidates won 277 seats while BJP won only 81 seats.
Mir stated that in 2017 most of the political parties like PDP, NC, Congress had boycotted ULB polls despite it 84 per cent polling was recorded.
He mentioned that in the IInd tier elections of BDC polls in 2019, 98 per cent polling were recorded which itself witnessed that Panchs and Sarpanchs has participated wholeheartedly to strengthen the democracy in the Jammu and Kashmir.
Mir said that it was only due to the request of Panchayat Conference the Panchs and Sarpanchs from across J&K took part in BDC polls and made it a grand success. "AJKPC has appealed to the Panchs and Sarpanchs to vote for only Independent candidates leaving aside the candidates related to political parties because Panchayat Conference is not a political institution it's a community institution," Mir said.
Arun Sharma said that there are some political parties who are trying to take the credit of BDC polls by taking the winning BDC candidate into their party fold. He asked the independent candidates to work independently for the welfare of their respective areas and no need to associate with any political outfit. "If any political outfit forced any independent candidate to join their party fold he/she should approach the Panchayat Conference," Sharma added.
