Radio Kashmir' becomes 'All India Radio' in new J&K, Ladakh UTs | | | Early Times Report Srinagar, Oct 31: As Jammu and Kashmir lost its 72-year-old statehood in view of division of the state into two Union Territories following scrapping of Article 370 and Article 35A, the name of 'Radio Kashmir' has been changed to 'All India Radio'. 'Radio Kashmir', which is at power with private radio stations running in the newly created UTs of J&K and Ladakh, was established on July 1, 1948 when Sheikh Abdullah, the then Prime Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, inaugurated the Radio Kashmir Srinagar station near the Tourist Reception Centre in Srinagar. "With the approval of Prasar Bharati Board, the nomenclature has been changed from 'Radio Kashmir' to 'All India Radio' in the Union Territories of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh," official twitter handle of Prasar Bharati wrote. This change comes into effect from October 31, 2019. Prasar Bharati News Services also tweeted that Radio Stations in Jammu, Srinagar and Leh have been renamed as All India Radio, Jammu; All India Radio, Srinagar and All India Radio Leh, respectively. "We have an emotional connect with the name Radio Kashmir, which in itself was a brand name. We had worked very hard to get Radio Kashmir to the heights where it is today, even during troubled times. But now that it ceases to exist and all the hard works seems to have gone in vain," a broadcaster, who wished anonymity said. Girish Chandra Murmu on Thursday took oath as the first Lt Governor of the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir while R K Mathur became the first Lt Governor of Union Territory Ladakh after the state of Jammu and Kashmir was bifurcated on August 5, when centre scrapped Article 370 and Article 35 A. J N Zutshi was the first Director General of Radio Kashmir. He was also the Secretary to Information & Broadcasting to J&K Government. Ghulam Mohi-ud-Din was the first head of the station. Radio Kashmir Srinagar became very popular when Pushkar Bhan's Zoon Dab was aired for more than nineteen years from the Radio Kashmir station, and became a usual medium of entertainment for the people who used to listen the Radio. Radio Kashmir Srinagar contributed a lot towards the traditional music of Kashmir. The station became home of people like Ghulam Hassan Sofi, Raja Begham, Abdul Rashid, Vijay Kumar Malla and Shamima Dev, who used to sing Kashmir's traditional songs which provided relief to the disturbed minds of Kashmiris. During floods in Srinagar in September 2014 Radio Kashmir Srinagar station was only medium of communication between flood affected victims and their friends and families, besides the administration. |
