Three ex-CMs, dozens others, remain detained as J&K becomes UT | | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, Oct 31: Three former Chief Ministers were among dozens of senior leaders of different mainstream political parties, who remained under detention since August 5 in Jammu and Kashmir, which has lost its 72-year-old statehood and finally became Union Territory (UT) on Thursday. Around 100 separatist leaders and workers, besides stone pelters, have also been arrested, a majority of them detained under Public Safety Act and shifted to outside the Valley shortly before withdrawal of special status of the state. Three former Chief Ministers--Dr Farooq Abdullah, president of the National Conference (NC), his son vice president of NC Omar Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti, president of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)-- were detained on August 4 night. However, they were later detained under the Public Safety Act. Dozens of other senior leaders, including former ministers and legislators, were also detained as a precaution in the Valley, where life remained crippled due to strike and internet and postpaid mobile service and train service suspended since August 5. The Bharatiya Janata Party leaders, including former Deputy Chief Minister Kavinder Gupta, claimed that the situation remained by and large peaceful in the Valley in view of detention of these leaders.They alleged that these leaders were paying youths to pelt stones in the Valley. |
