Will JK get its statehood back by 2020 end? | GOI kept window for talks open, talks to begin soon | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Nov 5: The union government is likely to keep an option of restoration of the statehood open in Jammu and Kashmir and parleys with the state based leadership could revolve around this particular issue alone. Speculations are rife that a majority of the detained leadership of Jammu and Kashmir is being released and talks with them to normalize the situation will begin thereafter. However, the government of India seem to be adamant to talk alone on the restoration of the statehood and not on any other matter pertaining to 370 and its related clauses. “The GOI has kept the window slightly open and has hinted at giving back the statehood to Jammu and Kashmir. If you remember the speeches of Home Minister and of the Prime Minister you can recall that both have said that the union territory is temporary and statehood will be restored as and when situation witnesses betterment,” says a member of Kashmir based political group. According to him, the air is thick with the speculations that the government may hold parleys with the leaders and will release them from captivity soon in November only and by 2020, Jammu and Kashmir is likely to become state again. Pertinently, BJP General Secretary Ram Madhav also in his address in Srinagar on Oct 20, this year didnt hint that the political leaders detained by the government will be released anytime soon. He even claimed that the people are happy with the detention of these leaders and want the government not to release them any sooner . He also maintained that no demand except the return of the statehood should be raised in the state as the government after accessing the situation could give Jammu and Kashmir its statehood back. Government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi imposed a curfew in many parts of the state after amending the law to take away its autonomy and statehood. Many viewed it as pre-emptive move to check protests in the restive region. More than 4,000 people, including politicians of opposition groups, human rights activists and separatists, have been detained. Schools, universities, colleges and government offices remained all shut. The government’s attempts to reopen schools failed as parents are reluctant to send their children to school due to the wave of uncertainty. Home Minister Amit Shah in his interview however didn’t comment in detail about incarceration of the political leaders in the state durum his recent interview, stating that there apprehensions that those who had been detained could incite people for violence and disrupt public order. He also cited the example of NC Founder Sheikh Abdullah, stating that it was Congress government that jailed Sheikh Abdullah for no less than 11 long years. According to Shah, the BJP government should not be blamed for doing anything unconstitutional as every thing was being done to maintain peace and calm in Kashmir. |
