Defiance in Kashmir | | | Semblance of normalcy returning to Kashmir is not going well with the elements enimical to peace. Reports about attempts being made to set shops ablaze in Srinagar city and other areas have created fear among the members of the business community, who have been suffering for past more than four months due to the shutdown being enforced by the Pakistan sponsored terrorists in the Valley. Common people in Kashmir have been caught in the quagmire of uncertainty as they have no idea about what future has in store for them. Terrorists turning their guns towards the common man should serve as an eye opener for the people who used to support the stone pelters and gun wielding ultras. Past four months have once again proved it beyond doubt that the dream merchants, who sold dreams to people, were simply agents, who were getting their commission to keep the life disrupted in the Valley. People of Kashmir have mustered courage to defy the threats and diktats of the terrorists and are making all possible attempts to resume their daily chores. But they are facing intimidation from the so-called friends of Kashmiris. These friends stand exposed and people must have realized by now that they are their worst enemies. Soon after the life started to return to normal in November month threat posters appeared at many places in the Valley asking shopkeepers to keep their establishments closed. They were threatened that if they defy the diktats then they should be ready to face the consequences. The new threat that shopkeepers are facing is that unidentified persons are sprinkling petrol over the shutters of the shops during the night to keep the fear alive. During the past one month many shops have been gutted in multiple fire incidents in Srinagar's old city, Baramulla and Anantnag districts. Authorities have been maintaining that these shops are destroyed due to short circuit and there has been no official confirmation about these acts being the acts of sabotage. But the people know it very well that so many short circuits can't take place simultaneously. After August 5, Pakistan sponsored terrorists directed shopkeepers to open their establishments for two hours in the morning but since November shopkeepers are keeping their shops open till afternoon and even till the evening. The defiance on the part of business community has made them vulnerable. Despite facing threats, traders are putting up a brave face and are fighting against all the odds. |
