Right to protest can't justify violence | | | Violence breaking out across the country over Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) needs to stop as resorting to arson and stone pelting won't resolve any issues. The government has been repeatedly stating that there is no threat to the Indian citizens and the CAA aimed at granting citizenship rights to persecuted minorities in Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh. But protests are refusing to die. One can understand that people in a democracy have a right to stage protest but resorting to violence and damaging the public property can in no way be justified. People who are out on streets at different places are claiming that new citizenship law will divide the people on religious lines. But the government is claiming that the only purpose of the CAA is to prevent infiltrators from settling in India illegally. The logic being given by the government is simple that Muslims in Islamic Republics of Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh can't be persecuted for being Muslims but people from other religions can face the persecution and are infact facing it. And they have nowhere to go except India, which is the only secular country in the sub-continent. Opposition parties which have been buried under the Modi wave since 2014 have got an issue on a platter and they are trying to convey it to the Indian Muslims that their citizenship is at stake and they will have to prove that they are Indians when National Register of Citizenship (NRC) is implemented fully. Too much of politics is being played over the new citizenship law which has got nothing to do with the permanent residents of the country. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamta Banerjee in an astonishing statement sought intervention of United Nations (UN) into the NRC issue. She demanded that referendum supervised by the UN should be held to ascertain how many Indians are in favour of the NRC. Someone needs to tell Mamta Didi that she should stop talking like Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan as NRC and the new citizenship law are internal issues of the country which have to be sorted out among ourselves and outsiders cannot be allowed to interfere. After 2 people were killed in Police action against the protesters at Mangaluru, South Indian Film Superstar-turned-politician Rajnikanth issued a passionate appeal for peace and asked the fellow citizens to realize that we are all Indians and we cannot ruin our country by resorting to arson and violence. One hopes that better sense prevails and the violence ends. |
