Kathua, Dec 20: As many as 257 Biodiversity Management Committees (BMCs) were set up in Kathua district to document biological resources and chronicle traditional knowledge in the respective panchayats.This was informed by the DDC, O P Bhagat during a meeting organized for sensitizing the frontline forest staff, Sarpanchs, Panchs and other stakeholders who have ample role in constitution of BMCs in their panchayats which will document biological diversity and richness and chronicle traditional knowledge which will be later consolidated and put on GIS biodiversity database. The BMC will have six members nominated by the Panchayat and shall be mandated to prepare People's Biodiversity Register (PBR), list biological resources and associated traditional knowledge available within the jurisdiction of BMC, O P Sharma said who is the Member Secretary of J&K Biodiversity Board and the main point man of today`s meeting.The BMC will go a long way in listing as well as conserving wild bio diversity as well as cultivated biodiversity of the respective panchayat. It will also prepare a future road map for strengthening conservation and promoting sustainability of natural resources of the panchayat, Director SFRI, O P Sharma divulged.He also stressed on generating public awareness regarding conservation of biodiversity besides listing threatened plants and animals of the respective panchayat in the PBR.Among others, ACD, Sukhpal Singh, CEO, T R Mangotra, CHO, DFOs, BDOs, CEOs of Urban Local Bodies, NGO Saviourof innocent labour Arun Trisal (General Secy) and other concerned officers were present in the meeting. |
