Lakhs suffer as round the clock water supply denied, 50 meters canal caves in | Engineers refer to restoration work as herculean | |
Jehangir Rashid Early Times Report JAMMU, Dec 21: A huge population comprising of lakhs of souls living in the summer capital of union territory of Jammu & Kashmir and its outskirts is facing huge problem since they are not entitled to round the clock water supply. Reports reaching here said that residents of more than two dozen prominent areas of Srinagar district are facing numerous problems since the water supply is not available to them round the clock. The water supply is limited to few hours in the morning and couple in the evening. The trouble started when a canal of river Sindh breached at Malshahi Bagh more than a week back and the same is yet to be repaired. Around 50 meters of the canal has caved and it may take some time to get the things sorted out. The affected people have voiced serious concern over the statements of some engineers that it would take them a lot of time in setting the things right. The residents said that one of the engineers said that it would take two months to repair the canal while as yet another engineer had according to them said that at least one month would be required to repair the canal. "It is quite ridiculous that engineers are issuing irresponsible statements with regards to repair of the canal. Hardly 50 meters of canal has caved in and for repairing the same the engineers are setting too long a deadline. The restoration work needs to be taken up on war footing basis so that people heave a sigh of relief," said Mohammad Maqsood, a resident of Lal Bazar. Although the district administration pressed into service the tanker service for the people of affected areas, the same has not sufficed the demands of the people. The people said that since the affected areas are many the tanker service would not lead to desired results neither for administration nor the people. "Since important institutions like Sher-I-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences and University of Kashmir also fall under the jurisdiction of the affected areas it would be more than prudent to repair the canal at the earliest. The people at helm need to take engineers to task so that the restoration work is completed in due course of time without any delay," said Akhtar Ahmad, a resident of Soura. The residents demanded that since Chillai Kalan, the harshest period of winter season has already started the restoration work should be taken up more seriously and the same is completed at the earliest. They said as the chances of snowfall increase during this period it is important that the work is completed before any eventuality. |
