Dry chill intensifies, Srinagar record coldest night, Drass freezes at minus 29 | | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, Dec 25: Intense cold wave conditions continued as summer capital, Srinagar, recorded coldest night of the season at minus 4.3 degree while Drass in Union Territory (UT) of Ladakh froze at minus 29 degree minimum temperature on Wednesday. However, after many areas recorded coldest night of the winter so far because of open sky due to which water bodies, taps and drains were frozen, sun appeared again on Wednesday, providing some relief to people though icy cold winds also continued. A Met department spokesman said here this afternoon that weather will remain dry and there is no chance of rain or snow till last day of this year. Due to dry weather and clear sky, the minimum temperature could drop further though the maximum temperature will be near or above normal despite chilly winds, he said. Srinagar recorded minus 4.3 degree minimum temperature, coldest of the winter so far. It could drop further due to dry spell and open sky, he said. Again the water bodies, including the famed Dal Lake, most attractive tourist destination in Srinagar apart from Mughal gardens, were frozen. Though some interior parts of the Lake remained frozen, elsewhere in the water body water defreezed as the day progress. Water supply also became normal after frozen water in taps defreezed. He said the sky would be mainly clear and the maximum and minimum temperatures would be around 9 degree and minus 5 degree respectively during the next 24 hours. Truckers and other drivers were seen struggling to start their vehicle after diesel in tanks had frozen due to coldest night at Qazigund, gateway of Kashmir on Srinagar-Jammu national highway. The minimum temperature was minus 9.4 degree, coldest of the winter so far. Over 3,000 Jammu bound trucks were stranded on highway for the past about two weeks due to closure of the highway. World famous ski resort of Gulmarg witnessed a surge of over one degree while there was further drop of one degree in Pahalgam , a health resort. Against yesterdays minus 10.2 degree, the minimum temperature at Gulmarg was minus 9 degree. At Pahalgam the minimum temperature was minus 11.4 degree against yesterdays minus 10.4 degree. Kokernag recorded minus 6.7 degree against minus 6 witnessed yesterday while at Kupwara it was minus 5.6 degree, a notch colder than yesterday. Drass, a border town on national highway, connecting UT of Ladakh with Kashmir, was coldest in the region after the minimum dropped further and settled at minus 29 degree. Water bodies remained frozen in Drass and adjoining areas. However, troops remained deployed to foil any infiltration from Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (POK) at the Line of Control (LoC) in Drass and Kargil sectors. The capital of UT Ladakh, Leh, also witnessed drop of a notch in the minimum temperature. Against yesterdays minus 16.7 degree, it was minus 17.8 degree, he said. He said the sky would be mainly clear and the maximum and minimum temperatures would be around minus 1 and minus 18 respectively in Leh during the next 24 hour. |
