Greater step towards ending VIP Raj in JK | Govt. to snatch luxury vehicles from Bureaucrats, vehicle pooling suggested | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Dec 27:For the first time in Jammu and Kashmir's administrative history, bureaucrats will no longer be entitled to the luxurious officials vehicles as the government moves one step further towards making JK free from VVIP racism. As per the official sources, the bureaucrats who till now used to enjoy the luxurious vehicles will have to pool now with each other to reach to their respective departments as the government is all set to direct the finance department to purchase new electric vehicles with the capacity of 10 people at minimum that could ferry the bureaucrats from their residences to the offices. Report inform that till the post of Additional Secretaries including the Directors of various departments, no special vehicle from the government shall be decided for their travel and that they will have to contend themselves with the winger type vehicles which will have the seating capacity of 10 persons. "It will save a lot of peoples money and the measure is being taken keeping in view the plethora of complaints received from various quarters about the ruthless misuse of the official vehicles by the bureaucrats at large," says an official. Furthermore, if sources are to be believed, the next move will be to disallow the bureaucrats from sitting inside the comforts of cosy government rooms with several junior officials at their disposal. "There shall be no use of the staff that has bee dedicated to prepare teas and coffees for the Babus. The services of these officials can be utilised for greater official purposes," sources privy to this development told Early Times. Interestingly, in the past, Supreme Court took up the matter and tried clamping down on the lal batti culture in the country but without much success. In 2013, the SC bench hearing the petition on the use of red beacons noted: "What we have done in the last four decades would shock the most established political systems. The best example is the use of symbols of authority, including the red lights on the vehicles of public representatives from the lowest to the highest and civil servants of various cadres. The red lights symbolise power and the stark differentiation between those who are allowed to use them and the ones who are not. A large number of those using vehicles with red lights have no respect for the laws, and they treat the ordinary citizens with contempt. The use of red lights on the vehicles of public representatives and civil servants has perhaps no parallel in the world democracies." It clarified that only a few constitutional authorities in the country such as the President, Prime Minister, cabinet ministers, governors, the Chief Justice of India, Supreme Court judges and the heads of both houses of Parliament should have the VIP status. Meanwhile, with such a novel step, hopes are high that the Jammu and Kashmir, otherwise known for the VIP Raj will be free from the menace very soon. |
