‘BJP leaders fail to project sentiments of Jammu people’ | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Dec 29: Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) may not find it easy to make a comeback in Jammu due to the failure of its regional leadership to convince the centre to address the sentimental issues. An analyst while talking to Early Times said that most of the people in Jammu region had expected that this time around the government won't ignore their long pending demand of declaring a holiday on the birth anniversary of the last Dogra ruler of Jammu & Kashmir Maharaja Hari Singh. "When the BJP was in opposition its leaders used to rake up this issue vociferously. But after coming into power the BJP leaders from Jammu couldn't do much about it," the analyst added. He said that despite sharing power with People's Democratic Party (PDP) for more than 3 years, the BJP leaders in the erstwhile state of Jammu & Kashmir were unable to put their foot down and make PDP agreed to their demand. "PDP president and then Chief Minister of J&K Mehbooba Mufti simply turned down their demand to include Maharaja's birthday in the list of holidays," the analyst added. An observer said that deletion of NC founder Sheikh Mohd Abdullah's birthday and the so-called Martyrs' Day holiday from the list of holidays in Jammu & Kashmir were the steps taken on expected lines but not declaring a holiday on late Maharaja's birthday has disappointed the people of Jammu region. He said, "With each passing day it's becoming clear that BJP leaders from Jammu region have not been able to give a proper feedback to the policy makers sitting in New Delhi. There entire politics seems to be based on being in power and nothing more." The observer said that had these leaders been able to put forth the point of view of Jammu people in clear terms many issues could have got resolved by now. "It seems that the leaders of the saffron party have made their national leaders believe that all is well in Jammu and there is nothing to worry about. They seem to have created a notion that whenever the Assembly elections are held in the newly carved out Union Territory of Jammu & Kashmir BJP would emerge victorious and the first Chief Minister of the J&K UT will be from their party," he added. The observer said that BJP leaders seem to be unaware about the ground realities. "They need to realize that opposition parties in Jammu are gaining ground due to their persistent failures and the Assembly elections is fought over local issues and not the national issues," he added. |
