All is not well in Abdullah family as Kamaal skips crucial NC meetings | | | Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Jan 7: Even as the National Conference has resumed its activities like holding of meeting at the party headquarters in the twin capitals of the Union Territory, one of the senior most leaders of the party and close relative of the Abdullahs has been skipping such events. Senior NC leader and former minster Dr Mustafa Kamal, who is also the brother of NC patron Dr Abdullah, was conspicuous for his absence at the recently held party meetings in Nawa-e-Subh in Srinagar. Sources said in the absence of Dr Abdullah and his son Omar Abdullah, both of whom are under detention, it was expected that Dr Kamaal would lead the party activities as being the member of the same Abdullah family. But in his absence, a middle rung leader, Showkat Mir had to lead the meeting of the party leaders held at Nawa-e-Subh, sources said. Sources said Dr Kamaal is upset since the day the NC "snubbed" him for having issued a statement that his party would not contest elections till Article 370 is restored. Sources said both the party and Kamaal are not on the same page over the issue of participation in the Assembly elections and thus he is being "discouraged from giving any statement that goes against the interest of the party and prospective participation in the elections." Seen as "firebrand voice" of the NC, Kamaal's distancing from party activities at this crucial juncture suggests that the leadership is of the unanimous consensus that he should be "discouraged for the time being." Sources said for the time being some middle rung leaders including Imran Nabi Dar are looking after the political activities at the NC head office and are avoiding issuance of any controversial statements. Despite repeated attempts the NC leaders were not available for comments. |
