Will earlier discrimination over power reformatory schemes in Jammu cease to exist? | Post UT Creation | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Jan 11: The discrimination with Jammu region in the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir in power reforms was dominating the scenes within the corridors of power. Now with the creation of union territory, the million dollar question remains that whether this decades old discrimination will be allowed to thrive. As per the reports, the government hasn't taken so far any serious measures in addressing the mounting power crises in Jammu region and the reasons why the place was being discriminated against on the grounds of issuance of funds. People of the region meanwhile have high expectations that equal distribution of resources will from now on be witnessed by those at the helm. Records reveal that under IPDS, Rs 202.27 crore were to be utilized for upgrading of power infrastructure in Jammu region, while as Rs 222.22 crore in Kashmir region. The scheme aims at underground cabling of power lines, cutting line losses and many other things. Leaving the Jammu region in lurch and providing it 20 crore rupees less than Valley was decided after the centrally sponsored scheme IPDS was initiated by the GOI and JK was given its due share. It is understood that there are scores of hamlets in far flung areas of Jammu region that are yet to see any electricity. As far as Kashmir Valley is concerned the situation comparatively is bette. Though some issues regarding equal distribution of funds were raised, however same were not taken into consideration. In another scheme called Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Gram Jyoti Yojana (DDUGJY), Jammu region was again sanctioned 62 crore rupees less than Kashmir Valley. While Valley will get Rs 293.30 crore, Jammu had Rs 231.45 crore in its kitty. The scheme will enable to initiate much awaited reforms in the rural areas. It focuses on feeder separation (rural households & agricultural) and strengthening of sub-transmission & distribution infrastructure including metering at all levels in rural areas. This will help in providing round the clock power to rural households and adequate power to agricultural consumers .The earlier scheme for rural electrification viz. Rajiv Gandhi Grameen Vidyutikaran Yojana (RGGVY) has been subsumed in the new scheme as its rural electrification component. Meanwhile, the Transmission and Distribution (T&D) losses in Jammu and Kashmir are touching new heights with little being done by the erstwhile state dispensation to curtail the same. As worst ever power scenario is being witnessed in both Jammu as well as in Kashmir valley, the state is set to witness more tough times ahead. There are already reports of concern that Jammu and Kashmir's power demand would take a leap of 9000 more MWs of power with demand of 4217 MW in 2021-22 witnessed. The erstwhile state at present has the demand of 2,200 MW. As per the reports, the government has given approval for the formation of a panel that has been tasked to look into the mounting discrimination complaints raised from time to time from Jammu. The panel has been tasked to submit its report with the government and likely the rectification measures are being taken in near future. |
