Div admin claims all is well people ask where is the wellness | Inclement weather, non-availability of essentials taking toll on Kashmiris | | Jehangir Rashid
Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, Jan 15: The people at helm in Kashmir have made it a habit of claiming that all is well while as the situation is very bad in the summer capital of Jammu & Kashmir and other districts of the valley. Despite claims by the administration that all the essentials are piled in good numbers across the valley the ground situation is grim. The people of Kashmir valley are up against many odds due to the inclement weather and the situation has aggravated due to the non-availability of essential items in the market. Just last week there was hue and cry over the fuel shortage in the Kashmir valley with people running from here to there in order to get a litre of petrol or diesel. Same is the situation with regards to the supply of Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG) cylinders as people crave to get one LPG cylinder. “The continuous closure of Srinagar-Jammu national highway has led to scarcity of LPG cylinders in the Kashmir valley. Furthermore, the trucks carrying LPG cylinders are not allowed to pass through the Chenani-Nashri tunnel and they are asked to follow the Patnitop route. It takes more than a week for a truck carrying LPG or fuel from Jammu to reach Srinagar,” said a gas dealer on the condition of anonymity. The gas dealer said that the situation can be eased only when all the petroleum companies have their LPG bottling plants in Kashmir. He said the LPG bottling plant of Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) at Pampore does not suffice to the demand of HP dealers and not to talk of dealers of other petroleum companies. “If the highway remains closed for some more days we may have precarious position with regards to supply of essentials like kerosene oil, petrol, diesel and gas. At the same time essential food items like rice, flour, vegetables, eggs, mutton, chicken and baby food would also go out of stock with people craving for the same,” said Manzoor Ahmad, a resident of Nishat. People as a whole say that no physical check of the essential items is carried out by the administration with the concerned stakeholders just dishing out the figures in this regard. They demand that the divisional administration should carry out physical verification of the essential items saying that once this is done then things will fall in place. “Nobody disputes the claims made by the concerned department about the availability of various essential items. It is here the problem starts and the administration should look into this whole issue. There should be a periodic check of the essentials so that the department does not bully the people who are already under tremendous stress,” said Ishtiyaq Ahmad, a resident of Shaheed Gunj. It would be in place to mention here that Srinagar-Jammu national highway has remained closed on frequent basis during this winter. As a result of this the trucks carrying the essentials do not reach the valley and the people travelling on the highway also could not reach their respective destinations.
