Azad exploring options | | | Former Chief Minister of the erstwhile State of Jammu and Kashmir and veteran Congress leader, Ghulam Nabi Azad, planning to return to J&K politics is an indication that the Congress wants to make a comeback in the newly carved out Union Territory. The Congress party has been on crossroads in J&K since 2014 after it lost power. From 2002 to 2014 the party shared power in J&K for two consecutive terms, first with the Peoples Democratic Party and then with National Conference. On both the occasions Azad played a vital role. However, in 2014 J&K assembly elections, Azad’s magic didn’t work and the Congress party had to face a defeat in Jammu region, which was considered to be the party’s citadel in the past. As on date the Congress party is on a weak wicket in Jammu as well as Kashmir region. The former Congress ministers have not been visible for the past so many years. Barring a few leaders, others seem to have called it quits. Azad, who is the Leader of the Opposition in Rajya Sabha, has a strong reason to explore his options in J&K as his term in Rajya Sabha would end within a year. For him returning to J&K is the best bet. The Bharatiya Janata Party, which won 25 out of 37 assembly seats in 2014 elections in Jammu region, may not be able to repeat its performance as and when the elections are held in the J&K UT. The local BJP leaders are trying to drive home a point that they have done lot of work in Jammu during the past six years and the people of Jammu have no other option other than voting for them. But many people in Jammu believe that other parties have an outside chance of turning the tables on the BJP. Azad seems to have sniffed it and wants to make an attempt to revive the Congress in J&K. In Kashmir field is open as National Conference and Peoples Democratic Party stand decimated post August 5, 2019. These parties have been left with nothing to sell. The leaders of both these parties are under detention. Whenever they will come out they will have to put in lot of efforts to put their parties back on the track. Azad seems to have assessed the situation very well. He is aware of the fact that after he completes his term in Rajya Sabha, he won’t be left with much work to do in New Delhi. So returning to J&K is the best available option. |
