Second rung leaders making noise to keep party alive
PDP biggest loser post Aug 5
2/3/2020 12:00:55 AM
EARLY TIMES REPORT

JAMMU, Feb 2: A few leaders of Peoples Democratic Party are trying to keep the party alive by holding frequent meetings and reiterating that they have full faith in the leadership of their detained party president Mehbooba Mufti.
An analyst while talking to Early Times said, “The leaders, who are making these attempts, are also aware of the fact that their party has been the biggest loser post August 5 and chances of it getting revived are bleak.”
On Saturday a few PDP leaders held a meeting in Jammu and tried to send a message across that the PDP is there to stay and it’s waiting for the release of its president Mehbooba Mufti.
The analyst said, “The PDP leaders will have to start from a scratch to put the party together again. The party leaders, who used to be an important part of the party’s mechanism have either deserted the party or have been expelled. The PDP has been left with second rung leaders, who will have to do a lot of homework to rope in the party cadres, who have deserted the PDP post August 5.”
He said, “The PDP has been left issueless in Kashmir. Neither it can preach separatism, nor can it tell the people that PDP is the only party which can act as a bridge between India and Pakistan.”
An observer said that the PDP which had emerged as an alternative for National Conference in Jammu and Kashmir got “crumbled under its own weight.” “Despite being in detention for the past six months, the twitter handle of the PDP President Mehbooba Mufti is active. The handle is being run by her daughter Iltija Mufti and she leaves no chance to pinch the government,” he added.
“The PDP leaders who are still part and parcel of the party should sit together and hammer out a strategy which is based on the nationalist lines. Indulging in mere rhetoric won’t help their cause,” the observer added.
Another analyst said, “The PDP leaders who have been released in the past months are maintaining silence due to obvious reasons. So no one can expect them to come up with any plan to resurrect the PDP. Fate of the PDP president Mehbooba Mufti is hanging in balance as no one know how long she will be kept under detention. Leaders like AltafBukhari and others have made their intentions clear that they are ready to play ball with New Delhi and want to be part of the new set up.”
