Barring Gurez roads to far flung, remote areas reopen in Kashmir

Srinagar, Feb 2: Barring border town of Gurez, roads to dozens of far flung and remote areas, including those near the Line of Control (LoC), were reopened on Sunday after remaining closed for 20 days due to accumulation of several feet of snow in north Kashmir.
However, 167 passengers stranded in Bandipora and Gurez were airlifted in special sorties to their respective destinations.
'Traffic has been restored on Kupwara-Keran and Kupwara-Machil roads after clearing several feet of snow,' an official of Police Control Room (PCR), Kupwara, said.He said snow clearance operation was taken up on war foot and several feet of snow was cleared to put through traffic on Kupwara-Machil road. 'Road leading to Keran has been cleared of snow till Daad bridge. Still 12 km road to the border town is to be cleared of several feet of snow,' he added. Meanwhile, traffic was plying normally on Kupwara-Karnah road, which was reopened on Friday after remaining closed for two days due to snowfall. Razdan pass, connecting Gurez, Neeru and dozens of other areas near LoC with district headquarters Bandipora, remained closed due to accumulation of about 12 feet of snow at several places.
A police official told UNI that about 12 feet of snow was accumulated at Razdan pass and adjoining areas on the road.
'It is highly unlikely that these areas will be reconnected to district headquarter before May,' he added.
The government has approved a tunnel at Razdan pass to make it an all weather road.
An official spokesperson said that as many as 100 passengers were airlifted from Gurez to Bandipora and Srinagar while 67 passengers were airlifted from Bandipora to Dawar, Baduab and Neeru(Tulail) in Gurez valley in 22 sorties of MI-17 helicopter and Pavan Hans helicopter service including 10 sorties of MI-17 and 12 sorties of Pavan Hans. added that 127 passengers were airlifted from Bandipora and Gurez last week by the civil administration.
