JAMMU, Feb 3: A plot that underlines the caste and class system lurking underneath the disciplined exterior of the Indian army is the bold attempt by Swadesh Deepak in his all-time hit production “ Court Martial” that formed the third production of the ongoing Nutan International Theatre Festival-2020. The play highlighted the social fault-lines that exist in as fearsome an institution as the army and was very clinically executed by a strong group of actors under the ace-direction of Shilpi Marwaha for the group Sukhmanch, New Delhi. The play Court Martial opens in a trial room for central character Ram Chandra, a jawan accused of murdering one of his senior officers, Captain Verma, and injuring another, Captain B.D. Kapoor. Battle-hardened, Col Surat Singh is presiding over the proceeding that has no sympathy for those who violate the discipline of the army. During the course of this trial several startling facts come to light about the norms of society which leaves everyone awe-struck. Interwoven with a startling message, Court Martial delves into the intricacies of the army personnel and their lives at the border protecting our nation. The audiences get into the skin of every character and stay glued to the seat until the climax. Splendid performances by matured theatre artistes and the great works of the writers took Court Martial to splendid heights. Each and every actor gave their best and this is what made the play even more engaging. The soulful background score until the end produced haunting spells. Director Shilpi Marawah deserves congratulations for picking such a psychologically demanding play. Shilpi Marwaha, Soumyabrata Bhattacharya, Deepant Kandoi , Zeeshan Khan , Rahul Singh, Santosh Aggarwal, Dipesh Rohilla, Gaurav Dubey, Ravindra Shashtri, Anant Raj Singh and others performed their roles with ease and perfection. |
