Early Times Report

JAMMU, Feb 3: Removal of Toll Plaza at Lakhanpur which led to lifting of other checklists Excise & Taxation Department JK has led to increasing lifting of minning material from Ravii belt in Kathua district bordering Punjab. According to sources there was a constant check on dumpers and tippers carrying excavated material from Ravi basin in Kathua district as the vehicles passing through toll plaza had to pay hefty amount as Toll Tax. But with the lifting of check post on January 2 this year there is a field day for mining smugglers in the area.
Sources said since the lifting of check post 250 to 300 tipper loads cross Ravi area in KerrianGandyal and smuggle the material for construction purpose to crushers in Punjab area. This practice continued despite ban on mining in the State.
Sources said the mining mafia of Punjab is so active that not only they violate ban orders but even thrash the officials of JK trying to object the same.
Sources said with the recent episode when the officials of JK Geology and Mining were attacked in Ravi belt by Punjab mafia it was expected that the illegal mining will be stopped now. But this has proved totally wrong as smuggling of excavated material from Ravi bed to Punjab increased since then and during night hours 250 to 300 vehicles carry the excavated material for crishers lying from Punjab side.
Sources said failure of administration to act decisively against Punjab mafia has also scared the officials of the Department. The indecisiveness on part of administration to act the mining mafia has also generated lot of resentment among the people in KerrianGandyal belt which is worst hit due to increased mining in Ravi belt.
