Srinagar to be 'more flood prone' as SMC plans bridge on flood channel 'without NoC'
2/8/2020 11:17:36 PM
Early Times Report
srinagar, Feb 8: In a move that is feared to make Srinagar "more flood-prone", the Srinagar Municipal Corporation or SMC is planning to construct a bridge on the Doodh Ganga flood spill channel here.
Official sources said the SMC has decided to constructed the bridge on the spill channel allegedly without getting requisite clearance from the competent authorities especially the Irrigation and Flood Control Department or the IFCD.
Officials in the IFCD told Early Times that it was mandatory for the SMC to get clearance from the former. "The area already has so many bridges and construction of any further bridge can further reduce the flood bearing capacity of the spill channel and as such the matter has to be decided by the experts," said a senior official in the IFCD on the condition of anonymity.
He said the construction of any such bridge could make Srinagar more flood prone. "Doodh Ganga did overflow in the area during the floods of 2014 which means that no more of bridges can be allowed to be made on the channel in a way that the flow of water gets hampered further," explained one expert in the IFCD.
Officials said before the prospective construction it was mandatory for the SMC to get No objection Certificate from various offices especially the IFCD.
"Taking a decision of construction without getting NOCs from the concerned quarters is unlawful to say the least," said a senior official.
When contacted a senior official in the SMC confirmed that decision has been taken to construct the said bridge. He however was not sure of having got the requisite NoCs. "May be we have got them but we are not sure," the official said.
Meanwhile the IFCD officials said that District Commissioner Srinagar should look into the matter.
