Smart City project needs a push | | | Jammu has been awaiting its transition into a Smart City since 2015. It was in this year that the Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, had sanctioned 80K crore for the various developmental projects in Jammu and Kashmir. More than four years have elapsed since then but till date no progress has been made to turn Jammu into the Smart City. Though package announced by the Prime Minister, Modi, was an all inclusive bonanza for Jammu and Kashmir but funds for the Smart City project were earmarked separately. When PDP and BJP shared power in J&K from 2015 onwards, the Kashmir centric PDP was not that keen on carrying out any developmental work in Jammu region. The BJP ministers in the government led by the PDP tried to stay away from annoying the Kashmir centric leaders as they were busy reaping the fruits of power. This led to Jammu getting ignored and most of the development projects remaining confined to papers only. The PDP led regime even stopped the developmental projects which were started by its predecessor. People were hoping that the transition of the erstwhile J&K State into a Union Territory will end the discrimination with Jammu region and the projects which remained non-starters during the political regime will see the light of the day. But it seems that people will have to wait for some more time as things are not moving. There is no reason for administration of the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir to delay the Smart City project in Jammu. The ground work has already been done, only a little impetus is needed to push the project. Many areas in Jammu City are without the basic amenities and the people at the helm cannot ignore these issues. The J&K started functioning as the Union Territory on October 31, 2019, but the works which should have taken off are still in the pipeline for one or other reason. The Smart City project for Jammu already stands sanctioned but it looks like that it has got stuck into indeterminate state due not much attention being paid towards it. Civil society and the local media in Jammu region have been raising this issue again and again. At present Centre is directly controlling all the affairs of J&K UT. Its representatives need to pay attention towards issues which were ignored by the former regimes. This can drive home a point that the change has been for the good and addressing the issues of people is the government's top priority. |
