Roop Nagar in Digiana area bereft of civic amenities: Munish | Potholed roads, unhygienic conditions make life miserable for residents | | EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Mar 23: Expressing dismay over lack of civic amenities in Roop Nagar locality of Digiana area, the Editor-in-chief Early Times, Munish Gupta, on Monday said that the local residents are bereft of basic civic amenities but unfortunately the concerned agencies have failed even to ensure provision of elementary facilities like proper roads and hygienic surroundings. Munish, who would be contesting the next Assembly elections from Gandhi Nagar assembly constituency said, “It’s strange that people of this area are still not getting benefits of proper civic amenities such as leveled roads and sanitation. Such necessities have become a distant dream for the residents of Roop Nagar locality. The authorities should look into the problems of the inhabitants and try to address all the issues on priority.” Meanwhile, local residents of Roop Nagar rue that dilapidated lanes, roads and an overall unhygienic environment are common features in the area which falls under Ward No 58 of Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC). “Roop Nagar locality has not witnessed any visible development in comparison to the nearby areas where the status of civic amenities is much better. Residents of the area are forced to live in unhygienic conditions as no concrete step is being taken by the civic authorities to maintain proper sanitation in the area. Most of the roads are in a pathetic state as they have developed potholes due to their non-restoration since several years,” said a local resident, Vinod Kumar. Pointing towards the continuous leakage of water from the supply pipes of a tube well located in the area, Vinod Kumar said that this wastage of water is going on for the past some time but the concerned department has failed to initiate necessary repairs for the same. “It’s a pity that the water is getting wasted due to nonstop leakage. The dripping is much more than what is being supplied to the locality and nearby areas. Precious water is getting wasted. Despite bringing the problem to the notice of the concerned department, the authorities have turned a blind eye and not paying any attention,” he added. One can find heaps of garbage dumped along the roadsides, which ultimately falls into the drains causing blockage. As the culverts are not repaired regularly, the overflowing drains of the area cause problems not only to the residents but also other commuters. “Though there is no major waterlogging problem in the area but the stagnant water of the choked drains has given rise to mosquito menace in the area. The drains here also need immediate repair,” a group of residents informed Early Times. “The civic authorities keep on making lot of assurances, but in reality nothing has changed on ground so far. The streetlights on many stretches of the roads also do not function, giving rise to anti-social activities in the area. No adequate steps are being taken to ensure proper sanitation in the locality,” they added. |
