NC patriarch prefers not to break lull, hints at major developments in future | Domicile Order and Dr Farooq’s silence speak volumes | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Apr 2: On a day when the entire Jammu and Kashmir’s political spectrum expressed opinion on the domicile order issued by the Government of India, it was the silence of NC patriarch Dr Farooq Abdullah that emerged intriguing to the core. The NC President did not even utter a word about the order or about its content or about whether it was acceptable to him or not in any away. However, this veteran politician did issue a detailed statement on COVID19 outbreak and asked people to support each other during the present trying circumstances. “We are unquestionably facing a big health emergency; the measures taken to curb the spread are inescapable. However, it is not the well-offs who are facing the brunt, it is the poor, who unfortunately have been thrown to wolves,” Said Abdullah. “Ours is a society of deep inequalities, for the poorest of poor, the daily wagers, the hawkers, the cabbies, artisans and other socially downtrodden sections of society, it is no less than a nightmare.” Interestingly it was only him who did not make his views public on the issue while his son and his party ridiculed the new order. Prior to this, on March 14, this year when Congress MP Ghulam Nabi Azad met the freed politician, he dodged the questions related to Article 370. Azad while talking to the media persons along with Dr Farooq pitched for the restoration of Statehood for Jammu and Kashmir and preferred not to raise any issue pertaining to the abrogation of 370 and whether the order issued on August 5, last year should be rolled back. This was meanwhile for the first time that Congress party has sent feelers about being comfortable with the scraping of JK’s special status for now. When asked by the reporters about why instead of restoration of the JKs special status, he raised the issue about the statehood, Azad underlined the need for the resumption of political activities and audaciously ducked the question about the subtle acceptable of August 5 presidential order. More interesting to find was NC President Dr Farooq Abdullah watching with stoic silence while Azad was preferring to remain silent on what the party earlier used to term as a core issue. Azad’s action has sent the enough feels about the Kashmir’s mainstream political parties accepting what happened on August 5 and instead of pitching for the restoration of special status are demanding statehood for Jammu and Kashmir. Meanwhile, it appears that the NC patriarch has decided to shun its Article 370 demand and that his party may toe the line of the central government about the issue. It is going to be an interesting situation to watch as the political developments are going to take place in the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir during the coming days. Will NC patriarch break the lull or will find refuge in the silence which looks ruthlessly stoic in nature. |
