Rules are for fools, ‘influential’ SMC Corporator exempted! | | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, May 8: Even as hiding travel history with regard to the Covid19 is a cognizable offence, the administration has been silent over one such complaint in the Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) here. As per official sources, brother of one “influential” corporator had secretly returned from New Delhi in violation of the norms and had been hiding at this residence. Sources said the said corporator “enjoys patronage of a regional party in Kashmir and thus was being spared from legal action.” The corporator, who holds a democratic chair, not only remained silent over the return of his brother but also attended his duties at the SMC. After some days the brother developed symptoms of the ailment and was tested positive. A few days later the said corporator also tested positive. “But till that time he was moving around in the SMC and must have infected many of us, how can government be silent over such an issue of criminal negligence on the part of the corporator?” said an SMC official on the condition of anonymity. While the SMC have issued a list of its staff and corporators who have been put in quarantine, the officials have raised objections on the issue. “Firstly, the quarantine has to be for three weeks and not two weeks and secondly the SMC has given a clean chit to the corporator who has risked lives of everyone in the civic body,” said the SMC officials, on the condition of anonymity. The officials said under norms the SMC should have filed a formal complaint against the corporator with police under the Disaster Management Act. “He (corporator) has not only been silent over the secret return of his brother but he didn’t bother to inform the authorities about such a crime. And apart from that he continued to visit the office and thus risked lives of one and all,” the SMC officials said. When contacted a senior official in the SMC on the condition of anonymity said they won’t file any such complaint as it was the job of the district administration. “Such complaint has to be filed by the office of the DC and not us,” the official said. Meanwhile the SMC officials have appealed Lieutenant Governor to personally look into the matter. |
