Jammu, May 11: Even as Jammu and Kashmir, like the rest of the world is fighting Covid-19, Udhampur district is showing the way to life in the Union Territory, earning appreciation from across the board. From taking a nationwide lead in introduction of home delivery of essentials to issuance of e-passes, the district has been the first to start many such services in the Union Territory. And, in the latest, the garrison district on Monday started resumption of non-essential shops in a phased manner in accordance with the union government guidelines for the Orange Zones. The announcement was made by the District Commissioner Udhampur Dr Piyush Singla. “Dear Udhampurites, based on feedback and requirement of public non-essential shops in Udhampur town are being opened from Monday as per roster. Expect all shall observe strict social distancing. Don’t give us chance to act tough. No pillion rider on motorcycle allowed,” the DC announced. Dr Singla, a medical doctor by qualification and winner of the National-e-Governance Award, had also taken a lead to deliver free food packets for the needy. The officer has already taken the covid testing to remotest areas of the hilly district. “Decentralised sampling model. Health teams reaching out to remotest corner of district to pick samples. Pics from Pancheri. 72 sampled. Ramped up testing,” he recently posted about the development,” Dr Singla recently said. In another major achievement, the district has introduced a hi-tech mechanism to register the passengers arriving at the Udhampur railway station. Talking to the Early Times, the DC said the mock drill for the arrival of the stranded, and their subsequent travel to home districts has been done successfully. He said the registration of all the passengers of the train comprising of some 22 odd coaches would be completed in 30 minutes, through a specialized software, the Transit Information Management System adding that atleast 44 people have been assigned the task. The Chief Secretary BVR Subrahmanyam is understood to have been personally supervising the arrangements in place in the strategically crucial garrison district, which also houses headquarters of the Chinar Corps of the Indian Army. As about Dr Singla, the 2012 batch IAS, his work has been drawing appreciation even from the Prime Minister’s Office with the Minister of State in the Modi government and concerned MP, Dr Jitendra Singh not missing to appreciate the efforts of the young officer.
