Providing basic civic amenities duty, not a charity : Munish to admin | Lack of development irk residents of Shankar Vihar, Trikuta Nagar Extension1-P | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, May 20: Editor-in-Chief, Early Times, Munish Gupta said today that providing basic civic amenities to the people is not charity rather a duty of the administration. Munish, who would be contesting the forthcoming Assembly elections as an independent candidate from Gandhi Nagar constituency, said, “The administration has to change its laidback attitude. It has to be more proactive in its approach towards people's welfare. Programmes and policies made from time to time should give impetus to the development works and providing better services to the community. “Besides, the stress should be laid on early completion and smooth implementation of the works taken in hand. It would be much more reliable to hear ground reports, just talk to a diverse set of people around to improve the quality of existing infrastructure or making provisions for the fresh set of public services,” Munish added. He said that the poor infrastructural set up in Shankar Vihar, Trikuta Nagar Extension1-P, is another glaring example of the careless attitude of the official machinery adding that the local residents are forced to live a miserable life in absence of carpeted roads and proper hygienic conditions. Meanwhile, a group of residents of Shankar Vihar, Trikuta Nagar Extension1-P while speaking to Early Times said that improper development of their locality has made their lives pitiable. “Roads have turned to rubble, poor sanitation besides improper drainage system are few of the major problems being faced by the locals but there is no redressal to our problems,” the residents complained. Devoid of basic amenities, the residents alleged that the lanes and by-lanes are in dilapidated condition as majority of the inner roads in their area have not been macadamized for the last so many years. “We made repeated appeals to the concerned officials, however, the authorities have failed to ensure blacktopping of the lanes and by-lanes of the colony so far. Commuting on such bumpy and rough lanes gives hard times not only to travellers but also to pedestrians,” said the residents. Talking about cleanliness, the residents said that sanitary workers do not pick garbage on regular basis. We are facing problems due to poor sanitation,” said the residents. Several other residents of the area highlighted the problem of poor drainage system in their colony while they also rued the unhygienic conditions in which the inhabitants are living. “Drains in the area had not been upgraded even as a large number of homes were built over the years. The drains in most of the area are choked 1due to which the filthy water gets overflowed all around and even enters into houses,” they said. “The lanes and drains are in shambles. Drains are not cleared on regular basis while they are also not covered with iron mesh or concrete slabs,” they added. The locals said that nobody comes to listen to their grievances adding that the political class show their faces only when elections are round the corner and afterwards they never turn up to listen to their woes or try to address the issues confronting them. “The residents of the locality are grappling with a large number of civic issues but there is no respite despite making repeated efforts to overcome them,” said locals. |
