Life starts limping back to normal in parts of Jammu division amid 4.0 lockdown | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, May 20: Life has started limping back to normal in various green and orange zones of Jammu division as most of the shops and business establishments reopened amid certain restrictions on Wednesday after nearly two months of the coronavirus-induced lockdown. The Jammu and Kashmir administration had permitted resumption of many activities, including opening of markets, private offices and limited vehicular movement, in green and orange zones besides banks, private hospitals, and restaurants for home delivery in the Union Territory while extending the lockdown till May 31. The easing of the lockdown restrictions followed fresh categorisation of 20 districts. Wheels of the economy that had come to a screeching halt in Jammu and Kashmir, due to continuous lockdown owing to the novel coronavirus, have finally started moving. Lifting of restrictions by Union Territory administration during lockdown 4.0 has finally led to the resumption of business activity. Life seems to be limping back to normal as shops have opened in most of the localities and many factories that were lying abandoned for months together have started functioning. This has brought a smile back on the faces of both factory owners and labourers. The reason is obvious: the lockdown that was announced in late March has left a deep impact on the social and economic sectors. With no source of income, things were getting very difficult for labour class and daily wagers. They had exhausted all their resources to keep kitchen fire stoked. “We were finding our survival difficult. Coming back to work has given us a new lease of life. Now we will be able to take care of our family members,’’ said one of the labourers in packaging unit here at Bari Brahmana Industrial Zone. There was a lot of pressure on the government - both in centre and state to take certain measures to revive the dwindling economy. “Economy won’t survive on the ventilator for long. The need of the hour was to initiate steps to resume normal business activity. Good that they have taken measures in this regard,” said Rakesh Gupta, president Chamber of Commerce. Most of the shops and business establishments reopened in the green and orange districts with people seen maintaining social distancing and the shopkeepers also offering sanitisers to the customers, officials said. “We welcome the government decision but everyone had to play his or her role to prevent the spread of coronavirus, otherwise the effort of the prolonged lockdown will go in vain, Vipin Gupta, a shopkeeper said.
