Community Spread | | | The COVID-19 entering into the stage of community spread in Jammu and Kashmir has sent alarm bells ringing. The number of positive cases increasing rapidly have created fear among the people. The big question is how we save ourselves from this deadly virus? Doctors are advising people to take precautions and boost their immunity to fight the pandemic and are asking people with underlying conditions to stay at home as it appears that peak has arrived and anyone can be hit. The doctors are counting on the “herd immunity” factor as most of them are of the opinion that it will help in defeating the virus. The bottomline seems to be that the immunity only can save lives. With economy opening up nearly after three months people will have to take extra precautions and care. The end of lockdown doesn’t mean that the epidemic has ended. The lockdown period provided doctors and scientists with an opportunity to study the virus. Now, the ball has been pushed in the people’s court and they have been asked to protect themselves on their own. The most worrying factors are doctors and pregnant women getting infected. Efforts are being made to keep them safe but it appears to be a Herculean task. For doctors to get infected is a professional hazard and they will have to ensure that they protect themselves and remain extra vigilant. It appears that the stage of detecting the suspects and tracing all their contacts is almost over. The fresh guidelines which have been issued clearly state that the people with mild symptoms can be put under home quarantine. But the asymptomatic people can become the real carriers as they themselves don’t know that they are carrying the virus. It’s important to increase the testing rate to locate the asymptomatic people. For that testing kits have to be made available in the market so that people without relying on the government hospitals are able to conduct their tests and take the steps that are needed. In the countries which have been worst hit by the COVID-19, the elders and the people with underlying comorbidities have been the worst sufferers. At this point of time we need to take care of the people who are old and need our attention. They cannot be left to die as they are most vulnerable to the virus. The challenge is becoming tougher with each passing day and we need to gear-up to defeat COVID-19. Maintaining hand hygiene, wearing masks and maintaining social distancing hold the key. |
