Heaps of garbage in open plots at ‘posh Gandhi Nagar locality’ mocks at JMC
6/8/2020 12:13:26 AM
EARLY TIMES REPORT

JAMMU, June 7: Heaps of garbage, polythene as well as other waste material in the open plots at otherwise called posh Gandhi Nagar locality, which is in the heart of Jammu city, are virtually mocking at the claims of Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) regarding cleanliness, sanitation and proper hygiene.
Though the administration responsibility of maintaining proper cleanliness, sanitation and hygiene in various localities of Jammu city, vests with the JMC and time and again in the media, the authorities have been self-praising themselves for allegedly maintaining it but the ground realities speak something totally different.
For instance the Gandhi Nagar locality, which is one of the posh localities of Jammu city and has the residences of top bureaucrats, politicians and other influential people of the city. Despite the fact that the top bureaucracy of the UT is residing in the locality but at the front of sanitation, cleanliness and hygiene the concerned authorities have failed to ensure the same.
Several drains in the locality have been choked while some of the open plots within the locality could be easily found, which exposes the JMC administration. One such open plot is a few meters behind the residence of former Forest Minister Choudhary Lal Singh and its one wall touches the wall of the temple. The plot is full of garbage heaps, scattered polythene carry bags, while bushes have grown all around. From the scene of this abandoned plot, it could be found that the JMC administration had never paid any heed towards cleaning such plots.
When it comes to cleaning such plots, the JMC administration easily puts the onus of ensuring cleaning of such abandoned plots on the owners and abdicates themselves from such responsibility. “But ensuring cleanliness of the locality is the responsibility of the JMC and even the JMC can compel the owners of the plots and even in case some departments to clean such plots in the locality. The JMC can also impose penalty on the owners for not maintaining hygiene in the abandoned plots”, a senior citizen of Gandhi Nagar said, adding that open garbage heaps in the plots create nuisance to the adjoining locality members and those visiting the temple.
He further said that during summers and in the rainy season, such abandoned spaces became breeding ground for insects, mosquitoes, reptiles etc, which pose threat to the lives of residents. “The JMC cannot shun its responsibility of maintaining cleanliness by hiding behind the name of owners but ensuring the cleanliness is the sole responsibility of JMC and it should handle it properly”, another citizen said, adding that there were many such abandoned plots in the locality, which must be look after by JMC administration without making excuses. The common citizens of the locality have urged the Lieutenant Governor led UT administration to issue instructions to the JMC administration for ensuring cleanliness and hygiene in atleast Gandhi Nagar locality.
