Residents of Pyt Balota chigla forced to drink unsafe water | | | ASHWANI SHARMA Early Times Report
UDHAMPUR, June 17: At a time when the authorities are busy in making people aware about importance of cleanliness and adopting hygienic ways of life in the wake of coronavirus outbreak, the inhabitants of Panchayat Balota chigla of tehsil Ramnagar in district Udhampur are forced to consume contaminated water. Panch of the Panchayat, informed that a tank build in the village by PHE department long ago is poorly maintained. “The tank was never cleaned after it was dedicated to the public. Moroever, it is open on the top allowing the dust particles to fall into it,” he said. Many other villagers informed that earlier the chlorine tablets were used to kill harmful pathogens in water meant for public supply but now a day they are never used in the tank. “The pipes feeding water to the tank and those meant for supplying are broken at several places due to which dirt and muck mixes with the water making it dirty and unfit for drinking,” Balvinder Singh, a social worker said. Villagers informed that the tank caters to the water needs of about 500 people residing in the area. Kuldeep Kumar, a local informed that they took up the matter with the concerned authorities on several occasions but no action was taken and the locals continue to drink dirty water thereby risking their health. When contacted Executive Engineer PHE Udhampur, Mohammad Taj said that he will send the Junior Engineer concerned to that place to look into the matter and try to provide clean water to the people of Panchayat Chigla Balota.
