Early Times Report

Anantnag, June 17: Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Department in South Kashmir’s Anantnag district has come under scanner as reports related to procurement of grocery items for Quarantine centers at Maximum Retail Price (MRP) have surfaced in official corridors.
According to reports, the department has made procurements in lakhs for different Quarantine centers of the district during last two months.
They said that department has ‘intentionally’ procured grocery items from one wholesale dealer on highest price. “The procurement has been made on maximum retail price (MRP) and not on wholesale rates,” official sources revealed to Early Times.
The MRP is a manufacturer calculated price that is the highest price that can be charged for a product, however dealers especially retailers sell products for less than the MRP when procurement is made in bulk.
“At initial stage it wasn’t possible for the department to float tenders or Dasti Quotations but after few weeks the department should have proceeded as per the laid down norms,” a group of shopkeepers told Early Times.
They claimed that the department benefited a single general store owner and has released lakhs of rupees to him.
“Department has benefited one shopkeeper and now how they can justify it,” they said, adding that if probed fairly this will turn out a major scam in Anantnag. Assistant Director, FCS&CA Department Anantnag Wali Mohammad admitted that they have procured grocery items on Maximum Retail Price (MRP).
“Yes we procured these items on MRP,” he told Early Times.
The officer said that due to lockdown they couldn’t float tender but procurements were made on lowest rates.
“Currently we aren’t procuring but earlier we have procured it from market and supplied to Quarantine centers,” he added.
He also admitted that maximum procurements were made from general store in Anantnag.
