Daryada-Balad villagers crave for water, admin slumbers | | | RAJESH TANDON Early Times Report
MENDHAR, June 23: Daryada-Balad village, situated along the Line of Control and nearly 4 kms from village Sagra in Mankot tehsil of Mendhar Sub Division of Poonch district, is still deprived of water supply. People of this small hamlet have been craving for a drop of water for the last 40 years but neither the government nor any political leader has bothered to provide them one of the basic necessities of life. Local resident Jahangir Hussain said that today the Government of India claimed about Digital India while various people- friendly schemes are being implemented at the ground level but their condition remains the same as they are craving for proper water supply for the last 40 years. “Even in the 21st century, we have no option other than to press into service our horses to carry water. We approached the District Development Commissioner Poonch, officials of the PHE Department and political leaders belonging to different parties, but till date no one has listened to us, they only fed us with false assurances and failed to provide water,” he said. He said that the problem to fetch water from natural resources aggravates as and when Pakistan Army resorts to shelling as the villagers are unable to go out during heavy firing, adding that the locals remain thirsty for days due to continuous cross-LoC firing. The villagers have appealed to the LG Jammu and Kashmir Union Territory and Prime Minister to look into their problem and ask the administrative officers to visit our area and see what kind of life they live here.
