BJP top brass visit became ‘game-changer’ for SMC elections | | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, July 22: Even as the Jammu and Kashmir government deferred the elections for Mayor of Srinagar Municipal Corporation citing the prevalent Covid-19 situation, the role played by the Bharatiya Janta Party top brass is not being ruled out. Sources said the recent visit of the BJP top brass including Ram Madhav and Dr Jitendra Singh, flanked by other senior party leaders remained a game-changer for the SMC elections that were otherwise scheduled to be held on July 14. Sources said during their brief halt in the summer capital, the issue of the elections for SMC was picked up with the BJP leaders, including party’s JK president Ravinder Raina. Sources said Madhav and Jitendra were apprised that two of the probable faces for the chair of mayor had been in touch with the party leadership looking ahead for support of the BJP councilors. It was reliably learnt that the party leadership remained indecisive on the issue of whom to support in the elections. Sources said the JK chapter of the BJP was divided on whom to support in the election as two of the probable faces had been trying to appease the right wing party. Sources said the party discussed the “pros and cons” of supporting either of the two candidates and that it was finally resolved that the choice was difficult and thus it was better to “wait for the elections to get deferred.” “Both the candidates have numerous complaints against them and thus we didn’t want to make a selection of our choice in a hurry lest it brings in bad name for the party,” said a BJP leader on the condition of anonymity. Sources said the BJP leadership resolved that no such decision should be taken in a hurry lest it dents that image of the party. “One of them is accused of corruption and the other one is a bank defaulter so we didn’t want to our image at stake,” said a BJP leader on the condition of anonymity. The Housing department however ruled any political interference. “The elections have been postponed given the sudden spike in positive cases of Covid,” the official said on the condition of anonymity. |
