DAY OF THE YEAR: NATIONAL PARENTS DAY, JULY 26 | | | Dr. Parveen Kumar, Dr. R. K. Arora
God gives us life with both happy and sad moments, but parents strive to give us only happy moments. Parents are at the roots of goodness. They give us someone to rely on, shoulders to cry on, heart to hold us closely and do everything for us to raise us to more than their level best. The greatest work of an individual rich or poor, black or white, when it comes down to the evening of their life is their children and grandchildren, the work of being a parent. Where would we be without our parents, the people who loved us even before we were born? They do so much for us every day of our young lives and the love doesn’t stop once we are adults. The depth of the love of parents for their children cannot be measured. It is like no other relationship. It exceeds concern for life itself. The love of a parent for a child is continuous and transcends heartbreak and disappointment. What a person is today, a lot of this his come from the parents. No matter whether they are the blood parents or someone who is considered to be parents because of the role they have played in some one’s life, it doesn’t matter. This is the person who we believe has been there for throughout our life, watched us and helped us to become the person we are today. Throughout our lives, our parents are there to guide us and lead us to be independent thinkers and to develop our own personalities. They are there to help us achieve our goals. Being a parent is not an easy task. Most parents have endless worry and a lot of sleepless nights. This is why it is important to have a day so that can honor parents who do everything they can to protect and raise their children. National Parents’ Day July 26, celebrated on the fourth Sunday in July is an honour to the parents on this special day. For parents, we are always kids; beautiful little miracles, they cheer us at every step when we start crawling, stand on our own legs, walk on our own, hold a bat in our hand, take admission in the school and are get a promotion to next class. Their contributions in our lives are endless and selfless. They celebrate every day of ours. The origins of Parents’ Day can be traced back to the 1930s. Starting in 1930, some Christian communities began to celebrate Mother’s Day or Parents’ Day. This tradition was combined with Korea’s traditional Confucianism culture to eventually establish Mother’s Day. In 1956, the State Council of South Korea designated May 8 as an annual Mother’s Day. However, the question of Father’s Day was discussed and on March 30, 1973, May 8 was designated as Parents’ Day under Presidential Decree 6615, or the Regulations Concerning Various Holidays. When Parents’ Day was first established, the entire week with the 8th day was designated to be a week to respect the elderly, but respecting elders in the month of May was abolished in 1997 with October becoming the month designated for respecting the elderly. Parents Day is celebrated globally across different countries. It is observed in South Korea on May 8 and in the United States it is celebrated on fourth Sunday of July. The South Korean designation was established in 1973, replacing the Mother’s Day previously marked on May 8, and includes public and private celebrations. The United States day was created in 1994 under President Bill Clinton. June 1 has also been proclaimed as ‘Global Day of Parents’ by the United Nations as a mark of appreciation for the commitment of parents towards their children. In the Philippines, while it is not strictly observed or celebrated, the first Monday of December each year is proclaimed as Parents’ Day. The United Nations proclaimed June 1 to be the Global Day of Parents ‘to appreciate all parents in all parts of the world for their selfless commitment to children and their lifelong sacrifice towards nurturing this relationship’. It is the same day as International Children’s Day. Dianthus Caryophyllus, commonly called as Carnations is a flower that symbolizes Parents’ Day and in South Korea, the flowers are given to parents by their children on Parents’ Day Parents are not going to be around us forever. There is no better way to celebrate Parents’ Day than to spend some time with our parents. We can go out for a meal together or spend some time doing an activity that all enjoy. We don’t have to spend any money in order to make Parents’ Day a special day. We simply need to spend some time with our parents and make sure they realize just how much we appreciate them. For young children, this could be something as simple as doing the laundry or a task around the house in order to help your parents out and allow them to put their feet up for the day. On this day, if we are not living with our parents; we should call or visit our parents. We should tell our parents how much they mean to us. Parents are always dispensing wisdom and advice as we grow up, most of it unsolicited. As kids, we often dismiss these truths or ignore them outright. Then, we grow up and have kids of our own and we realize how right our parents were about pretty much everything all along. We should make them realize that they were right. We should find out where our parents have always wanted to go and send them on vacation. If, due to certain reasons, we are unable to see them on this special day, it is a good idea to put together a special video message for them. We can send a lovely heartfelt message about how much we love and appreciate our parents, as well as taking a trip down memory lane and mentioning some of the special memories we have had with them. Parents Day promotes the message that the role of the parent is important in human development which requires investment, focus and commitment. The day aims to promote responsible parenting and to recognize positive parental role models. It celebrates the special bonds of love between parental figures and their children. |
