Omar’s doublespeak | | | National Conference vice-president Omar Abdullah breaking his silence nearly five months after his release from the detention has created ripples within his party. The article which he wrote in a national daily stirred the hornet’s nest. He had written that he won’t contest the assembly elections till J&K remains a Union Territory. Soon after his article appeared NC chief spokesman Aga Ruhullah, tendered his resignation from the post as well as the party. Ruhullah snapping ties with NC rattled Omar and he started blaming journalists for misinterpreting the Oped he had written. Omar in an interview to Srinagar based news agency tried to do the damage control by once again raking up the issue of abrogation of Article 370. He tried to drive home a point that besides seeking statehood, he wants J&K’s special status to be restored. On the other hand in an interview to another national daily Omar admitted that Article 370 was discriminatory. Omar’s double speak has created confusion even within his party. It appears that the NC vice-president is unsure about how to react to the situation. It looks like that Omar fears that Ruhullah’s resignation will open the floodgates and it can lead to National Conference getting dismantled. By stating that he won’t contest the assembly elections till J&K remains a Union Territory, he has thrown the debate open. Omar and his father Dr Farooq Abdullah know it very well that Article 370 is history now and talking about its restoration won’t serve any purpose. After their release the biggest hint the father-son duo dropped about they are comfortable with the change in status-quo was that they remained silent for so many months. Everyone knows that NC is a father-son party and final decisions are taken by Farooq Abdullah and his son Omar Abdullah. It’s evident that both of them have decided to move on as they have realized that their tantrums won’t change anything. Rather than changing his statements, Omar needs to muster courage and tell his party men that tendering resignations won’t bring the Article 370 back. But Omar seems to have become nervous and looks uncertain about what future holds for him and his party as people in Kashmir have simply turned their backs towards the Kashmir’s grand old party. The NC leaders should realize that times have changed. They will have to muster courage and speak the truth rather than beating round the bush. |
