Kashmir gets boost in schooling, Jammu to wait

Early Times Report

Jammu, Aug 1: While the first anniversary of the abrogation of the special status of Jammu and Kashmir is round the corner, the allegations of discrimination with Jammu region continue to be on the rise.
In the latest, the government has decided to give a boost to education in Kashmir by opening another state-of-the-art Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya in the valley whereas no such new branch is being opened in Jammu.
Official sources said the multi-crore expenditure, Jawahar Navodiya Vidyalaya, would come up at Bandipora.
Official documents reveal that the Administrative Council (AC), which recently met in Srinagar approved allotment and transfer of land up to 132 kanals 8 marlas to the School Education Department at village Brar, for construction of Jawahar Navodiya Vidyalaya (JNV).
The government is so keen on improvement of education in Kashmir that till the construction of school infrastructure gets completed, alternate arrangements for housing the JNV are being carried out.
“Once operational, the school will cater to the educational needs of the children of far flung areas of district Bandipora and adjacent areas by providing quality education as envisaged under the constitutional right of education,” official documents reveal.
Educationists have taken a serious note of the alleged discrimination with Jammu. “Nobody is against the improvement of education in Kashmir but then why Kashmir alone and why shouldn’t Jammu also get another such school,” asked a noted educationist on the condition of anonymity.
It is pertinent to mention that both Jammu and Kashmir regions have Jawahar Navodya Vidyalaya. In Kashmir the districts like Ganderbal, Budgam, Baramulla, Anantnag and in Jammu region has such facilities are in in districts like Rajauri and Jammu.
But the government plan of opening another branch in Kashmir alone suggests that Jammu is yet again being deprived of its due share in augmentation of such services.
Since last year when the abrogation of the special status took place, Jammu continues to be allegedly deprived of its due share.
While Market Intervention Schemes like that of procurement of apples worth crores was started in Kashmir, no such facility was offered to growers in Jammu. Also, the government gave special funds worth crores for improvement of infrastructure in Srinagar whereas no such scheme was started for Jammu.
In the latest, the government granted Rs ten crores for improvement of Covid19 related infrastructure at hospitals in Srinagar whereas Jammu was given only Rs five crore.
When contacted a senior official refuted the allegations of discrimination with Jammu region adding that the government was committed for equitable development of both the regions of the Union Territory. He said such Jawahar Navodya Vidyalaya has already come up in Jammu.
