In Kashmir vehicle lifers use load carriers to target prey
‘Organised gang active, will hunt them down’

Early Times Report

Srinagar, Aug 9: In an eye-opener for people, gone are the days when the vehicle lifters would break open the lock of the vehicle and drive it away, in Kashmir now such gangs use load carriers to steal the automobile from the main roads.
Police has got access to a shocking CCTV footage which shows that the burglars use load carriers to steal vehicles.
The video in question shows that two men lift a bike parked in Nowpora area of Srinagar by parking their load carrier next to it.
The youth first get closer to the bike and another one brings the load carrier close to the bike. One of them lifts the bike and pushes into the load carrier and the other one pulls it inside.
After putting the bike inside the load carrier, the duo take the front seat of the four wheeler and flee.
A police official said the vehicle lifters seem to have specially designed some load carriers to steal vehicles.
“We’re surprised to see the crime taking place in this new way,” said a senior official on the condition of anonymity.
The registration number of the load carrier used for the crime however is not visible in the video.
Sources said the police apprehend it to be the work of an “organized nexus of vehicle lifters.”
A senior official said the police have got some credible leads into the case and that a major breakthrough was expected in the case soon.
“We don’t want to make anything public about leads lest it hampers investigations but one thing is clear that it’s a major nexus and will be exposed soon,” said the police official.
It is pertinent to mention that cases of vehicle lifting have been on rise in Kashmir.
